Super Bowl 53 Odds and Betting Preview

There’s nothing like playoff football, but the 2018-19 NFL postseason has been even crazier than usual. Three of the four Wild Card teams made it into the Divisional Round – only to have their Super Bowl dreams crushed. Then the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams both needed overtime to win their conference title games.

It all sets up what promises to be a very competitive matchup this Sunday (6:30 PM ET, CBS) at Super Bowl 53, live from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. This Super Bowl 53 betting guide will cover all the essentials for the Big Game, focusing on the two teams in question and what they bring to the table.

Super Bowl 53 Betting Preview

The Patriots (13-5 SU, 11-7 ATS) and Rams (15-3 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) both entered the playoffs as No. 2 seeds, although it was a close shave for New England in the AFC – they almost got overtaken by the Chicago Bears and forced into playing on Wild Card Weekend. The Pats enjoyed the first-round bye before each of their five Super Bowl wins.

Los Angeles had their first-round NFC bye well in hand after winning 11 of their first 12 regular-season games. They finished the year with a point differential of plus-143, well ahead of the Patriots at plus-111, and they did it playing a more difficult schedule than New England – who once again took advantage of the soft competition in the AFC East. The Rams would probably be favored in this matchup (on neutral ground) if it happened any other time of year.

Super Bowl 53 Betting Favourite: New England Patriots

Instead, the Patriots are 3-point favourites on the Super Bowl betting odds at press time. They opened at –2 back on January 20, then moved up to –2.5 and again to –3 the following day. New England have been a big draw at the ticket window ever since Tom Brady led them to a 20-17 win over the St. Louis Rams (–14) at Super Bowl XXXVI. Brady has been named Super Bowl MVP four times, under the watchful eye of head coach Bill Belichick, arguably the greatest coach in NFL history.

This particular Patriots team isn’t among the best of the Belichick-Brady Era. They’ve got some issues on defense, particularly against the run, but New England’s offense is still among the best in the league, and rookie running back Sony Michel has been a big part of that; Michel has already scored five touchdowns during these playoffs, and could easily add to that total on Sunday.

Super Bowl 53 Betting Underdog: Los Angeles Rams

That’s because the Rams’ rush defense is even worse than New England’s. It’s the one glaring weakness on a team that otherwise has a formidable frontline with Aaron Donald at right end and Ndamukong Suh at nose tackle. They’ll be tested by the stout Patriots offensive line, which allowed just 21 sacks during the regular season while providing some of the best run blocking in football.

The Rams also don’t have the same fervent fan base as the Patriots. Moving to LA has yet to restore the team’s profile in its former home; many of the fans who showed up at the Coliseum this year were wearing the other team’s uniform. This is also a young, up-and-coming squad that’s only in the playoffs for the second time since 2005. But a win on Sunday would change things dramatically – and maybe put an end to the Patriots’ dynasty that began 17 years ago with a win over the Rams.<

In addition to the point spread, there are hundreds of other lines on the Super Bowl 53 odds board at Bodog Sportsbook. The total for Sunday’s game is 56.5 points at press time, down from 58 at the open, while the Patriots have moved from –135 to –150 on the moneyline. And of course, there are hundreds of different Super Bowl props waiting to be discovered, everything from the opening Coin Toss to the “Gatorade Shower” at the final gun.

Will Belichick be the one getting doused again? Or will it be Rams head coach Sean McVay, the reigning AP Coach of the Year? We’ll find out on Sunday. In the meantime, keep checking in with Bodog for the latest Super Bowl 53 odds, and enjoy the Big Game.
