Horse Betting: California Chrome Favoured at Dubai World Cup

The Kentucky Derby isn’t far off, but before we get there, we’ve got one of the biggest horse races of the season happening this weekend: the 2016 Dubai World Cup. The race is 1 1/4 miles on dirt with a purse of $10 million, making it the most lucrative horse race in the world. We’ll see some of the best horses in the industry – including many that raced in the 2015 Triple Crown – in what will be one of the most competitive races of the season.

2016 Entries

California Chrome (+160) and Frosted (+225) are the Dubai World Cup favourites, and that’s not a big surprise after California Chrome finished second last year. The 5-year-old has won both of his 2016 outings while Frosted has won his lone 2016 start, bouncing back nicely from a seventh-place finish at the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Mshawish (+850), Hoppertunity (+1400), Special Fighter (+1200), Mubtaahij (+1200), Keen Ice (+1600), Vadamos (+2000) and Hokko Tarumae (+2000) are next in line. Hokko Tarumae is the only horse on this list that has experience racing the Dubai World Cup, with a fifth-place finish in 2015. Mshawish may not have experience racing the World Cup, but he did place third in last year's Grade 1 Dubai Turf and is coming off back-to-back wins (Donn Handicap and Hal’s Hope). Hoppertunity is coming off a win at the San Antonio Handicap and has finished in the money in his last five races, unlike Keen Ice and Mubtaahij, who have failed to finish in the money in their last four starts. Special Fighter has been up and down in his four 2016 competitions, winning two and finishing sixth in the other two starts. Finally, Vadamos is coming off a second-place run in a non-graded race.
